Overview
Mount Azhdahak (3,597 m) in the Gegham Highlands is the third-highest peak in Armenia and holds a rare lake inside an extinct volcano's crater. The approach by 4x4 vehicle covers the high plateau, with a stop at Lake Vank featuring ancient vishapakars — tall stone stelae carved with fish and dragon imagery by Bronze Age people 3,000–4,000 years ago.
A mountain pass rest stop includes freshly brewed coffee. The hike to the summit is on volcanic slopes — non-technical but steady. From the top, on a clear day, you can see Mount Ararat, the Aragats massif, and Lake Sevan simultaneously. In summer, nomadic shepherds with their herds add to the timeless atmosphere.
